Explore the 12 principles of animation through a series of practical exercises using cut-out and stop-motion animation. You will learn the fundamentals of this complex subject including how to animate simple objects, story development and character design. You will have the opportunity to develop your own ideas as well as working in groups, to give you a greater understanding of how an animation team works together and develop a film brief including storyboarding and scriptwriting. During the final week you will produce a short film of your ideas and work through a variety of post-production techniques to get your animated film ready for screening.
British Architecture and Design
An ideal introduction to British architecture and design, this course is based around the creative processes of ‘thinking and making’ to enhance your understanding of architectural design. You will consider architectural concepts of space, form, function and technology through a mixture of theory, practice and fieldwork. You will develop your drawing skills, whilst individual and group studio projects will allow you to explore building materials and methods of construction. Course study trips will underpin your studio sessions with visits to significant buildings and public spaces, including London. You’ll be encouraged to use digital techniques in your work, along with drawing and illustrative methods to develop your ideas on building concepts, spatial awareness and form. Using your drawings and digital software, you will also produce a 3D model from your design.
Drawing and Illustration
You will cover the fundamentals of drawing and illustration such as the use of tone and light, colour, line, the edge, shape, form, mark making and negative space. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials including charcoal, inks, sticks, oil pastel and chalk pastels, acrylics to name a few. You will develop your critical awareness of visual communication and explore a variety of illustration methods and techniques to enhance your understanding of the design process and effectively communicate your ideas. The course includes sessions on location to inspire you, with day trips to areas such as Dorset’s impressive Jurassic coast as well life drawing of a clothed life model and other still life.
Fashion Design and Styling
Ideal for those who are considering further studies or a career in fashion, this course will introduce key concepts in fashion design and encourage you to develop your own fashion identity, to challenge assumptions, think unpredictably and reach surprising solutions.You will explore key concepts in fashion and have the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of fabrics and textile techniques. From sketchbook and fashion research through to understanding colour palettes, recording fashion shapes and understanding fabric manipulation, a series of practical workshops and inspirational study sessions will enhance your design knowledge, critical awareness and develop your fashion illustration skills. Our tutors will show you how to translate your visual ideas using a variety of materials and professional fashion equipment including digital printing. With guidance from the tutors your work will culminate with the styling of a photo shoot with a makeup artist on hand in which to record a series of images for you to add to your portfolio or develop further. The course includes a day-trip to London and professional photoshoot of your styled fashion look.
Practical Filmmaking
The UK film industry continues to be one of the world’s greatest providers of cinematic entertainment, and asks for passion, creativity, technical ability, vision, research and commitment. Ideal for those with an interest in pursuing film or media-related studies, this intense and fast-paced course will give you the chance to explore a variety of roles within the filmmaking process and develop an understanding of both the creative and technical aspects of making a film. Working in small groups you will develop a screenplay, shooting script and storyboard for a short fiction film, taking part in pre-production tasks such as casting, and developing a narrative, before beginning the live film shoot and post-production sessions.
Creative Make-up Academy
Through a mix of practical workshops, demonstrations and research, you’ll explore make-up and hair design for historical and contemporary drama. You’ll experiment with special effects and prosthetic make-up for film and television and learn about make-up and wig work for live performances. As you build your design and technical skills, you’ll also learn to plan and create finished looks for fashion styling and photography shoots. You’ll learn and practice a range of core technical and creative techniques to increase your confidence and will be encouraged to experiment; extended practical sessions will give you the opportunity to create your own looks and develop your own style.
Portfolio Preparation for the Arts
Gain experience in different art subjects and develop confidence in your creative abilities with this varied and stimulating course. Over 3 weeks you will produce work for your physical and digital portfolio exploring subjects that include Drawing and Illustration, Graphic Design, Fashion, Photography, Film, Architecture, Mixed Media and Print Making. You will work on a series of themed projects across a mixture of art subjects to allow you to experiment and explore your own creative identity whilst also developing your understanding of key creative processes to enhance your work. Your course tutors will offer guidance and support on creative application, as well as feedback on your artwork and advice on your future creative studies.
