9 Things You Must Do While Studying Abroad in Spain
If you have an opportunity to study in Spain, you cannot waste this precious time. The history, culture and unforgettable happiness that you can find only there is truly worth it. The time in Spain is passes by quickly, especially if you know how to spend it well, so don't waste it!
1. Practice speaking Spanish everywhere and make friends
Although it doesn't sound attractive, it is one of the best things you can do in Spain. Spanish people are friendly, tolerant and very helpful. With no offense to your teachers – nothing will improve your language skills as much as real conversation with Spanish native speakers in a cafeteria, tapas bar, etc. Did you know that two of the local languages of Spain, Galician and Basque, are of the oldest languages in Europe? If you want to experience the flavor of the specific regions of Spain, you should dive deep into the language of this country. Moreover, Spain is a country where people really value friendship. You will be surprised how fast you can make long-lasting friends.
2. Enjoy Spanish tapas!
No matter if you prefer meat, seafood or vegetarian tapas, there is a lot to try! Have you ever heard of patatas bravas, pan tumaka, black pudding, huevos rotos? If you haven't, visit Spain and give them a try. Moreover, you should remember that every region of Spain traditionally makes tortilla espanola in a bit different manner. Don't forget about delicious seafood and what’s most important: the fabulous culture of sharing tapas with a good company!
3. Go for a La Liga match
No matter if you like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona or any other Spanish team you have to experience the remarkable atmosphere of Spanish football stadiums. Believe me, even if you don't like football all, it is worth it. Unless you are Italian or you came from South America, you have never seen such a brilliant football culture as in Spain. Moreover, the level of the game won't disappoint you.
4. Visit the oldest lighthouse of the world
Most of the tourist guides suggest visiting Alhambra or Toledo. Of course, they are brilliant and worth a visit, but I would like to make a unique suggestion. In the north of Galicia, in the city of La Coruña, you can find a pearl on the map of the ancient treasures of Europe. Many people seem to be fascinated by the story of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Torre of Hercules is underrated on the map of must-visit places in Spain. Although this over 2,000-years-old lighthouse is the oldest still existing (and working!) lighthouse of the world protected by UNESCO, it is possible you have never heard of it.
5. Explore the history of Spanish Armada
Can you imagine the fleet of dozens of remarkable galleons? Or shipyards that build ships for the entire world? A huge part of the history of Spain is related to the seas and the oceans, dangerous voyages through the endless waters and sea battles. Visit the Naval Museum in Barcelona to learn all about it.
6. Dance on the street
Believe me or not, but dancing on the street in Spain is one of the most incredible experiences you might have. In Spain, nobody will look at you like on a madman, drunker, etc. Nobody will criticize you or laugh of you. Dancing on the street to the music played by a stray artist is unforgettable. Don't worry if you are not a good dancer! As Gloria Estefan sings, “The rhythm is gonna get you”.
7. Join at least one of the famous festivals!
No matter if it is La Tomatina or one of the other fabulous, colorful festivals, if you are in Spain it is a must. You should visit Valencia in March when they celebrate Las Fallas, or San Sebastian in January to see Tamborrada, which is all about drinking wine, eating delicious food and watching the groups of drummers in the city.
8. Visit the museums in houses of famous Spaniards
In Spain, you can find many smaller and bigger museums related to the history of famous people. Imagine you can experience the atmosphere of the houses of people who were talented artists, politicians, scientists, writers, etc. If you are in Spain you should at least visit the houses dedicated to Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Rosalia de Castro and Christopher Columbus.. However, every city, town, and village might offer dozens of so-called ''casa museos'' so keep your eyes wide open and be the guest of the most influential Spaniards in history.
9. Experience amazing beaches of Spain
From Ibiza to Basque country, from Galicia to Catalunya, the beaches of Spain are gorgeous and incredibly amazing. Moreover, most of them are quite clean and if you are lucky enough, you can feel like you’re on a lonely island. Every year all of the opinion-forming travel magazines recommend at least a few Spanish beaches as the most beautiful on Earth.
